DENTAL CROWN

At East Boston Dental & Orthodontics, we do everything possible to save damaged teeth. Tooth-shaped caps or covers, dental crowns completely encase damaged teeth up to the gumline. Dr. Bansal, Dr. Chawla and Dr. Jun, our skilled dentists, may suggest a dental crown in East Boston, Massachusetts to:

  • Hold a broken tooth together
  • Prevent a tooth from breaking
  • Support a large filling or root canal treatment
  • Anchor a dental bridge
  • Complete a dental implant
  • Maintain the natural beauty and health of your smile

Sometimes a tooth’s structure has weakened due to significant decay or subsequent fillings. In these cases, a crown restoration is required. To create a new crown, first the decay, and any previous filling, is removed. The tooth is then shaped in preparation to accept your crown restoration. Once the tooth is prepared, impressions are taken to model the exact shape required for the crown. A shade guide is used to determine the color of your surrounding teeth to ensure the restoration looks natural in your mouth. A temporary crown is then placed on your prepared tooth until the final crown is ready. Meanwhile, your impressions are sent to a dental lab where your final crown restoration is custom made to be the ideal shape and color for your mouth. A second appointment will be scheduled when the final crown is ready. At this appointment, the temporary crown is removed so that the final crown restoration can be cemented in place. Your crown will help protect your remaining tooth and with proper dental care, you can prevent further decay.

Cusp Fractures

When tooth is cracked, and the fracture involves one of the peaks of a molar, it is referred to as a cusp fracture. Some cusp fractures occur above the gumline and can be restored with a crown. Often these types of fractures occur near fillings that have been in place for a long time, as shown in this example. To create a new crown for your tooth, first the old filling is removed. New material is placed to build up and seal the supporting tooth. The tooth is shaped in preparation to accept your crown restoration. Once the tooth is prepared, impressions are taken, then used, to model the exact shape required for the crown. A shade guide is then used to determine the color of your surrounding teeth to ensure the restoration looks natural in your mouth. A temporary crown is then placed on your prepared tooth until the final crown is ready. Your impressions are sent to a dental lab where your final crown restoration is custom made to be the ideal shape and color for your mouth. Your crown will help protect and provide strength to your remaining tooth.
