Sometimes, a sudden stress on a tooth causes it to crack. Fractures can also simply be caused by every day wear and tear. If you have a tooth that is broken or cracked below the gums, you may be worried that you will lose your tooth. However, in many cases even these types of fractures can be treated. With crown lengthening your gumline can be lowered to access the damaged portion of the tooth in preparation for restoration. Before the procedure, you will receive anesthetic to completely numb the area. Small incisions are made and a flap of gum tissue is pulled back to expose the tooth and bone below the gumline. A small portion of bone is removed to allow access to more of the tooth. The gum area is then stitched in place and, if necessary, the tooth is filled with filling material. Your gums are given time to heal which may take several months. After this time your tooth may be further restored with a new crown.
