The Art and Science of Your Smile

A smile is a visual expression of emotion, beauty and well- being. A beautiful smile makes a lasting impression. If you want to improve upon your smile, many factors are taken into consideration. From the overall appearance, to the finer details, there is a math and science behind creating a beautiful smile. One example is the Golden Proportion; a visually pleasing ration consistently in nature. The Golden Proportion can be found throughout the human face and plays a key role in our perception of beauty. This is also true for the finer features, such as the teeth. You can see the Golden Proportion here in the progression of front upper teeth. Pleasing proportions are also considered when evaluating the shape of your front teeth. Ideally, the width of each tooth should be about three- quarters of its height making a pleasing shape. Vertically symmetry is another element of an attractive smile. Even if your individual facial characteristics aren’t symmetric, your teeth can be corrected to create the appearance {perception} of vertical symmetry. In a similar way, horizontal alignment is another factor we find pleasing to the eye. Ideally, your smile line should be parallel to your eyes. If there isn’t horizontal alignment, it can be created. Another component of an attractive smile is the tilt of your front, upper teeth. The long axis of each tooth should be angled slightly toward the middle of your mouth. Ratios, angles, alignment and symmetry are some of the mathematical elements that are taken into consideration when creating a beautiful smile.
